SCOPE DVIR: install on a tablet and check it works offline

One page for whoever has the tablet. Allow 20 minutes plus a connection at the start and the end. The full device script, with the multi-day and shared-tablet cases, is docs/offline-test-plan.md.

App address: https://scope-safety-poc.vercel.app/dvir

Before you start

  • You need Wi-Fi or mobile signal for the install and the first sign-in. After that, no.
  • iPad: use Safari. Chrome on iPad cannot install the app.
  • Android: use Chrome.
  • Do not use Private / Incognito browsing. The app stores inspections on the device and a private window throws them away.

1. Install (once per tablet)

iPad

  1. Open the address above in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow, at the top of the screen).
  3. Tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
  4. Close Safari. From now on open SCOPE DVIR from the home screen, never from Safari.

Android

  1. Open the address above in Chrome.
  2. A blue box says "Install this app for offline use". Tap Install. If there is no Install button, open the Chrome menu (three dots) and tap Install app or Add to Home screen.
  3. Open SCOPE DVIR from the home screen.

You know it is installed when it opens full screen with no address bar and the blue install box is gone. Tapping Not now hides the box for that visit only; the app is not installed.

2. Sign in

  1. Open SCOPE DVIR from the home screen.
  2. Tap Daniel Sgalia (Driver, Rutland). No password is typed; the demo signs in on the tap.
  3. The bar at the top should turn green: "Connected. Nothing waiting to upload." It shows gray "Checking connection…" for a second first.

Signing in inside the installed app is separate from any sign-in in the browser. Always sign in inside the installed app.

3. Offline check (10 minutes)

Step Do You should see
1 Turn Airplane Mode on and Wi-Fi off Bar turns amber: "No connection…"
2 Close the app fully (swipe it away). Reopen from the home screen Still signed in as Daniel, vehicles listed, bar amber. This is the important step.
3 Pick a vehicle. Enter an odometer higher than the "last" reading shown. Tap Mark remaining OK. Sign. Tap Submit Amber screen "Saved on this device". No inspection number yet
4 Close the app fully. Wait five minutes. Reopen Still signed in, bar says 1 inspection saved on this device. iPad: the app icon shows a "1" badge
5 Airplane Mode off, Wi-Fi on. Leave the app open Within about a minute: "Uploading 1…", then green. The saved screen shows the inspection number

Result: pass if every row matched. Tell Dan the inspection number so it can be confirmed in the database.

If something else happens

Write down the step number, what the screen said, and whether the app had been closed or left open. Take a screenshot. The one result that matters most: if step 2 or step 4 shows the sign-in screen instead of Daniel's form, stop and report it. That is the failure the design exists to prevent.

4. Rolling out to every tablet (production, not for this test)

The steps in section 1 are for one tablet in hand. For the fleet, IT installs the app from a device-management console (MDM) and nobody touches Safari or Chrome. General outline; the detailed procedure comes with client implementation.

  • iPad: enroll the tablets in Apple Business Manager, attach an MDM (Intune, Jamf, Mosyle, Kandji). Push a Web Clip with the app address, the icon and Full Screen on. The icon appears on every tablet.
  • Android: enroll under Android Enterprise (Intune, Google endpoint management, Samsung Knox, SOTI). Add the app address as a web app in managed Google Play, display standalone, assign to the tablet group. It installs like any other app.
  • If the client runs Microsoft 365, Intune is probably already licensed and covers both.

The same console can push the yard Wi-Fi, lock the tablet to this one app, change the address or icon everywhere at once, and wipe a lost tablet.

What it does not do: it installs the app, it does not sign anyone in. Each driver still signs in at the start of the shift, and the first open on a tablet needs a connection.

What the app team hands IT: the address, a 512 px icon, and the two screenshots of what "installed correctly" looks like. One email.

Optional longer checks

If you can keep the tablet for a few days, do section D of docs/offline-test-plan.md: file one inspection in Airplane Mode, leave it in Airplane Mode for three days opening the app once a day, then go online. It should upload and never ask you to sign in again.
